To my latino/latina viewers. Are you comfortable claiming your African roots? If no or yes explain why…

Absolutely. And many Latinos get mad or don’t like it. But as a Puerto Rican, how can you deny the history????

I’m very comfortable with it as it’s Puerto Rican history. I learned when I was a teenager that Puerto Ricans have a mix of Spanish, Indigenous Puerto Rican, and African heritage, hence why some of us look White, Black, and Mixed. The Latinos and Latinas who have African roots (not all do) and aren’t comfortable with claiming them are like that because despite being considered POC or non-Whites, they still have anti-Black views. I’ve known some personally who are like that and they annoy me.

Proud, yes. Obviously. 🇨🇺 However…my roots are further away from the tree with a lot of other stuff mixed in & not everyone is comfortable with that claim depending on the space I’m in, & I completely understand that. I think it’s way more important to be respectful & considerate vs. being accepted everywhere.

I don’t because then I’d have to claim being from Spain. And I have no ties to that. Nor Africa. I’m just a Hispanic from the U.S.

Tbh idk if I even have any. If I do, then I’m gonna say what I am but that wouldn’t make me black or African considering most of me is European (mom’s side is from France/Spain dad’s is from Mexico/Portugal/Spain & others that I forgot lol)

There's nun for me to claim. I just got called a “xigger bitch” the other day. 💆🏾♀️Smfh. Some of us don't get to choose to b Black when its convenient, we Black regardless. I’m Black 1st Latina 2nd. Thats what the police pull me over for and notice first. I’m only culturally latina and even that has changed. A lot of Latinos have become the colonizers fr, mentally and physically.

If they have African roots, so they are not Latins, they are Africans lol, latin countries is Portugal Italy Spain and France…is called “latin America” because of the Spanish and Portuguese colonization, big part of the population, are not Latin but African and indigenous descended, some mixed with Europeans, the term latin it has been used wrong they are “ hispanics” not latins, and this not racism or xenofobi, is history…

I accept the African cultural roots that makes part of my culture. Hell, I even defend my right to it from stateside Puerto Ricans coming here and accusing light skin Puerto Ricans of cultural appropriation: like sir, your ancestors left, mine stayed, I think we have a bigger say on this. However, genetically I’m only 5% African. I even have more British in me than I do African, which came as a surprise. Hmm…Maybe that’s why I never understood the jokes about British food being bland. 🤔
