Why does everyone always recommend Squiers for first guitars? I’ve only owned one and it was not a great experience, I’m not saying all of them suck, but I think you can get better guitars for the same price

The Squier brand covers a lot of territory from the very low end to very good instruments. The Classic Vibe series are good guitars for not that much money.

Gretsch and Ibanez kicking everyone's ass on quality electric choices sub-$500. (Yamaha still the acoustic champ, as ever.)

My first guitar was a Squier and it was fine for starting out (was probably like a 97 or 98 Strat). But yeah… once I moved on it was tough to go back to… however, I’ve bought a few Squiers recently (mostly Paranormal series), and they are pretty solid guitars. A couple minor mods can make them very solid. A really great canvas for teaching you how to repair, modify and experiment with guitars too… and given that it’s getting harder to find techs out there, that’s a pretty good skill to learn.

I’d personally recommend an entry level Ibanez. They are super playable, good quality and sound great/

Consider an Epiphone… Decent guitars you can soup up for a great price! Better yet - go to a LOCALLY OWNED music store and hang out with the guitars a bit. One will find YOU!

A much larger proportion of their guitars got really good in recent years. A lot of the older ones did indeed suck. But they significantly upped their game.

Knowing what I know now, I would have bought something over $1000 and not wasted time with $300 junk.
