I wanna talk to the producer who decided to troll country radio in the 90s by putting a drum fill that sounds like it came straight off a No Doubt record at the front of Alan Jackson’s “Mercury Blues”

I’d never heard the song, but listening now - you are spot on! That’s kinda awesome

That'd be Keith Stegall — and Eddie Bayers was the drummer. I wouldn't put it past either of them to have done it intentionally. Those peak-career AJ records had all sorts of nuance in them that people didn't often pick up.

I had to play this song without ever hearing it on a gig. The bass player turned to me and said “it starts like a Police song”. So that’s what I did. I don’t think he was wrong now that I listen to it. 😂

I had to go back and listen to the song after I read this and now I’ve got the whole family listening to Alan Jackson this morning. Nobody is mad about it.
