Yesterday I learned that you can no longer cite Wikipedia as a source for exams/assignments. Weird to think that in only a decade, a lot of small things like that have changed. Makes me feel old and I'm not even in my 30s 😅

It's also possible I'm completely misremembering and that they meant we should use the sources Wikipedia uses. Idk. My memory is shot to hell. I also have auditory processing issues so it's possible they told us to use the sources wiki uses and my brain just heard "use wikipedia" 🤷😅

I have never been told you could cite Wikipedia? My mom encouraged me to look at the sources though

Back in the 2000’s in college I was told we could not cite it.

It's never been acceptable to cite Wikipedia and I'm old enough to remember when wikipedia started.

We were always allowed to cite it - there is an applicable referencing style - but the social convention is that you don't. We were told that it's like citing the Dorling Kindersley My First Encyclopedia: everybody reads it, but you don't admit to it in a professional document 🤣 There are also legitimate concerns over its accuracy. Now that I mark assignments, we are specifically looking for whether you are accessing and reading peer reviewed journal papers, and analysing them.
