You know what, artists? It's totally ok if you don't have a private studio with natural light and exposed brick walls, and actually work in your basement that you share with the laundry room and exercise equipment that no one uses and your kid's stuffed animals from 10 years ago. IT'S FINE. Don't let social media tell you any different. Cheers.

I literally have 2m² in the basement as an allocated art space for messy work. Everything else happens wherever I can sit down. Still, art is happening. I wouldn't turn up my nose at that natural light hipster atelier, though.🫠😂

Yep. So much harder to be in the black with those additional expenses.

My studio's literally my dining room. Sometimes you can hear my dishwasher going from the next room in meetings, lol!

I love seeing all the different types of spaces people work in. What gets my goat is when someone has a really large studio and it’s not big enough for them. I work and pack at the same desk and it don’t bother me. The whole separate space for packing would be amazing of course but the moans and groans I hear like on YouTube do my head in when they can bloody well use that space better.

I’ve done meaningful work while in an ICU in a hospital, watercolors in a tiny sketchbook. I’ve drawn with pencils on brown paper bags. For years my studio was the kitchen table. The easiest place to work. Artist Chuck Close painted an enormous portrait using an ink pad and his thumb.

Yep. I know of one who works on her kitchen table and then has to clear it off every day to make dinner for the family.

My process is messy. I'm messy. I was teaching a workshop and students (adult) wanted a video. I panicked, thinking about the mess and the time it would take to make it video ready. One of the women saw my terror and responded to the fear. She stated that the authenticity was more important than Instagram cuteness. Gritty was good. I should probably make more videos but I'm too scared.

Heck, I worked my first 15 years as a professional cartoonist drawing on copier paper at the dining room table. Got a nice treehouse studio now. But the equipment is just the result of hard work and creativity, not the cause of it.
