Lyrical and evocative. I think it helps that all the places (or at least the placenames) are familiar - that the country of Laurie Lee is somewhere I call home. The chapter in which Loll actually drinks the eponymous cider makes uncomfortable reading to modern sensibilities.... I justify it to myself by remembering that those were different times. Which, to be fair, is rather the point.
