Rinsing my rice today I started to think: why is it that white people aren't taught to rinse rice when almost every other color/ethnicity is taught to rinse rice? My mom even commented last time she saw me do it that she's never rinsed rice in her life. I'm white and I didn't rinse my rice until I hung out with people of color. Just curious.

I was going to a Japanese friend’s house and made coconut rice to go with her piri piri chicken. The recipe said it was very important to the texture to rinse it until the water ran clear. Mentioned it, and she was baffled that I didn’t normally do that since it’s standard in her cooking. I’m kind of fascinated now as to the purpose and why I never knew that.
