Think about your work in progress as you fall asleep at night. Allow your subconscious to work on it while you rest.

You get better at it the more you do. Even writing badly helps you get better at writing. If you're ever struggling, remember than every writing session is also a writing exercise, and it doesn't have to be more than that.

Speaking from experience, your book quite literally has the power to affect people’s lives in ways you’ve never imagined.

Planning is hard, writing is harder, editing is harder-er.

I enjoy writing but I don’t do enough of it. When I schedule it, and follow through with the schedule, I do end up writing quite a bit. This works for me when I remember to do it, but it’s definitely not a magic formula or a take. Hope it helps you.

Well, do you want smart or do you want useful? Can't do both.

It can be hard, but it should still be enjoyable in some way. If it’s leaning towards ‘ugh I don’t want to do this!’ Then you’re heading towards burn out and it’s a good time to do something else for a while until things settle down again.

Small human behaviors that make no logical sense sit with me for a really long time when I'm reading, because they seem so genuine. Just read What We Find Back Home by Andy Foreman and there's a scene where a mother is being carried to an ambulance, and her daughter doesn't know what to do, so she kinda just held her hair so it wasn't hanging down?? It made no logical sense, didn't help the situation, but it was such a kind, human, "I want to do something, anything" type moment.

Sometimes you have to write through the crap to get to the good stuff. Just because the writing isn’t good it doesn’t mean it’s not useful

Writing is the process of winnowing down through ever deeper layers of subjectivity. You’ll never have certainty. Keep swimming. (Is that a take? If so, apologies. The first sentence is an insight PNH gave me once in medias res and it’s stuck with me ever since.)
