People seem to forget that "them" could also refer to two or more people. Even in a sentence that uses "someone" as a context clue to refer to a singular person, heck we are in threads where people can make mistakes on their sentence construction, thus one cannot assume, in full certainty, that "them" would automatically refer to a gender neutral person.
