This is something I've been struggling with as I write my book in the wuxia genre. I'm diaspora. I'm not even Chinese. My years in America are now 3x the years I spent growing up reading translated works from Jin Yong. And I love the genre more than anything. It is as you said, I fit in the "diaspora, and grew up with western storytelling" group. But ultimately, my hope is that, the setting is one thing, but books are about human strife or love--those are universal.
