It only takes 30-40 horsepower to steadily drive at highway speeds.
Yet people buy 300+ hp cars for the occasional thrill of acceleration. High hp engines suffer 50% efficiency loss when operated at low power, because they are actually most efficient at ~75% of full throttle (see below: 400/265=1.5x, or 50% more fuel per unit energy)
