Illustrators, do you show sketches to client? ✏️ I’m working on a project and I’m planning on showing sketches first to align on the different illustrated elements to save some time.

Yes I do, just to validate the direction and ask a few questions to make sure I'm going in the right direction. That said, many illustrators don't do this to avoid the client seeing an unfinished result. But personally, I've never had a problem showing my sketch, it reassures the client and promotes the satisfaction of involving them in the project in each step 👌

Every project! My terms are unlimited revisions at sketch, one round at colour. So much harder to amend finished art than sketches. “Unlimited sketches” makes the client feel confident they’ll get what they want, though I’ve never had to go past two rounds (and normally it’s just one).

Absolutely! It's possibly the most important part of the process of working for a client. You need sign off before moving on to colour. Otherwise you might get in a pickle. Review of pencil roughs are easy - reviews of finals....not so much!

Absolutely and will have them approve it before going further. This cuts down on false expectations and revisions. Imagine spending 14 hours on something for them to not like it and you're back to square one. Involve them as early as possible, set a number of free revisions, charge for anything beyond that and save yourself a ton of time in the long run

I have never NOT shown sketches to a clients in 20 years. How else would you know if you’re making the kind of work that fits their message?

Yes, I often ‘work up’ my favourite ideas a little to help give them a good chance though, and I also show less polished sketches where there is more built up trust with the client
