Reminded of Edmund Blunden's biography of Percy Bysshe Shelley where he says that Claire Clairmont was "now familiarly known as First Lady". That's an odd fact that doesn't crop up in any of the multiple Byron,, Bysshe, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley biographies or respective correspondence that I've encountered. Nor is it anywhere in Claire's biographies or journals or correspondence to my knowledge. I can imagine Mary in her frustration snarking about Lady Jane or Lady Clsire but First Lady?
