Step 1: order Shimano crankset on recommendation of bike fitter. Step 2: roll up sleeves, let’s get dirty and do this ourselves. Step 3: realize I have FSA cranks currently. Not shimano like I thought. Step 4: Realize I have a PF30 bottom bracket which isn’t compatible. Step 5: despair, reassemble bike, call LBS. Every time I try to work on my bike I get some detail wrong and the tools end up being more expensive than the labor

41 分鐘內	KJD kjdhawkhill	Sorry for your struggles. Sometimes the parts/compatibility research isn't worth my struggle, so I just drop her off. Sometimes I really want to turn my own wrench and save $75 in labor and $20 in markup, so I double check compatibility and order parts. (online or locally).
5 小時內	Greg R justgregr	I always get the shop to do the bottom bracket. That, spoke tension, and hanger alignment are the only things I have done in the shop. BB's are kind of like an adapter. The outside needs to match the frame and the inside the crankset. It can be quite a quagmire!

11 小時內	TheRealWax07 therealwax07	As I’ve become more experienced (ie. older), I’ve come to value my relationships with the top wrench at the best LBS and a trusted garage owner for my car. A couple of four-packs of beer or cider are always worth sharing.

You’re right; tools and extra parts will almost always save nothing over paying a shop to do the job. I still pay to get some jobs done on this basis, even though I can physically do most things myself (I no longer work in the trade).
