I record at home and don’t play live, but early this year, I started posting live from home version of my previously released songs on my YouTube channel. Even if I only released the‘studio’ version a few weeks earlier, I still have to practice it for a few days before I film the live version.

I’ve had to relearn parts before, especially after Covid.

With a few exceptions, mostly for very old songs that I played a million times when I was in bands in the 80s and 90s, if I don't play a song for a few weeks I'm not confident I can remember the whole thing without running through it, and in some cases I might need to check my notes to even see what key it's in. A lot of that is age tho. I'm 61.

I dread having someone request a song at a the start of a show that I haven’t played for 10 years and have zero chance of being able to relearn during intermission. just happened on Thursday … 🤣

Oh for sure. I’ve forgotten loads and every now and then I’ll get a flash back of a part and think oh my gawd YES! And then run to my guitar, I say run, it’s more of a walk, walk to my guitar and i only remember a smalll part and sit and wish I’d have recorded it and kept it back in the day. So many songs have hibernated in my mind.

And here I thought it was just me getting a bad memory as I get older. Glad to know we're in the same boat!

I’ve run into this, most often with the solos I’ve written, even more so when I’m not playing consistently. I have also forgotten a couple of 2nd guitar parts too. I do, fortunately, most of the rhythm parts. Bass parts? Most of those are forgotten. It’s an interesting situation to be in. I also do not play live and write all of the guitar and bass parts.
