People who bag on open tunings usually aren’t that tasteful of players anyways. As someone who’s been playing for 17+ years, nothing beats the richness they provide, or creates the space they naturally cut out for a vocal to sit on top. If I’m being honest most of the shapes I play in standard 4th based tunings are “open” as well. Love it all.
