THE BACK STORY Denali, or “The Great One in Koyukon Athabascan,” is visible only 20-30% of the time. In all my visits to Alaska, I got to see this magnificent mountain every time. So I consider myself beyond lucky, as it creates its own weather. Denali is actually a taller mountain than Everest because it starts around 2,000 and climbs to 20,310 feet, making it the tallest mountain of any that is entirely above sea level at over 18K.
