It’s both right? I had a class in art school where we had to make at least 5-10 studies every single week. I was never much a fan of making studies before. I usually have something very specific in mind and then I make that thing. But through the recursive method of studies and trying multiple variations, I found this method very helpful in that it reveals very quickly for you what NOT to do, or what you DONT want in your finished piece.
