just lost a photo bid to a client who booked someone “at a fraction” of my fee. and who would give the client the photos to own outright. 🙃 it stung a little but i had to keep a few things in mind. - this client is seeking someone *after* their previous photog ghosted them. 👀 - they will be sending direct mailers - they will run social media ads 2 of those scenarios already cost money, so they *have* additional money. i already discounted my rate over 50% even though it would have been a

rush job. the shoot itself wouldn’t take terribly long, but i would be taking time out of my already scheduled day to drive to another city, do the shoot, come back, and have perfect edits for them within a couple of days so they could go to print. i’m not sure if price shopping was a factor the first time, but you’d think they’d be more flexible the second time around? nah. don’t ever sell yourself short, y’all. giving usage in perpetuity? at a discount? IN THIS ECONOMY? good luck to them ✌🏾

You 1000% made the right choice. They were ghosted for a reason. This client would have been a nightmare and a shitshow. Pat yourself on the back and sleep better.

Clients looking for that big a discount/bargain and unreasonable demands up front will always be nightmare clients. People who value the service you provide and are willing to invest a reasonable/market rate for what you provide are always better clients.

…sometimes customers need to be put in their place…they are NOT always right, but can be horrible. Glad to see someone holding the line against predatory clients. We all need to put up a united front, unfortunately there will always be somebody that will do anything to get a job.

…an important thing I learned from 40 years of self employment is that the people who try to get a lower price never change. Haggling with you is their norm. Excuses are their standard MO. They will NEVER become a good client…and once you allow a discount, that becomes the norm for working with them. The only reason for working with them is having an opening you want to fill.
