kill off the main character and make everyone cry. pretty sure that’s what every good murder mystery entails! or have the main character actually be the murder and they’re just chasing around after themselves but leading the case off in believable but wrong ways so no one realises it’s them until the end

The butler did it? Include the important clues, but also a couple of red herrings to keep people guessing.
