Meg is correct. There seems to be this idea that consumer reviews must adhere to a strict code of integrity that obliges the reader to critique everything equally. But if you are friends with an author, that's a conflict of interest that would preclude you from even professionally criticizing them. Holding your friends to objective creative standards (that you invented) in public is just mean behavior. Don't put your starred review rubric before your artistic community.
