The 1970 (71?) Chevy Vega was a really good-looking little car ❤️

My first car was a '77 GT with a more-reliable 2.5L Sunbird engine, I loved that car but it was such a rust bucket and always broken. Character and utility for days, but rushed to production to compete with Pinto, AMC and imports. An engineer on the project once said another year of development and it would have crushed the segment. Fun and tossable burnout machine, but could also swallow my half stack and a 4pc drum kit with drummer on practice days! Terrible in snow.

It was better styled than Ford’s Pinto. There are nice details from EuroGM, too. It’s too bad that GM demanded so much while giving it so little. It was engineered to be stacked vertically on special train cars, and that forced a number of compromises onto it. Racing it down the production line faster than any other car didn’t help, either.

I worked with a guy that had a Yellow 2-door like the blue one in the photo. My work buddies and I had to go to a class one night. One guy rode with me and another guy with the Vega driver. The Vega drivers nickname was "Lurch". When he passed me on the highway, I looked over and he was way too big for the interior. It was funny to see. He looked very much like the photo.

Either the aluminum heads warped or the floor rusted out OR if you were really lucky yours did both!

It wasn't a bad car. My parents had two. Unfortunately, neither had the Cosworth engine option.

'71 was my 1st car. I beat the hell out of it. Only problem was it would occasionally snap a timing belt. Fun car. Never lost a race with a Pinto.
