When people adopt a shelter dog do they usually rename the dog or just stick with whatever name the shelter used?

I don’t know what the usual practice is, but we did rename our rescue dog. Say hello to Ollie…

Both. That seems to be a decision based upon the individual.

Stick with old name. Don’t want to confuse her. She already has a lot of changes to deal with. new place and new people

We renamed ours partly because they didn’t have them long, the names just didn’t fit their personalities and we didn’t really like them. But mostly because we thought, new name for their new life.

Her shelter name was Banana. I couldn’t with that and now she is Piper.

Mine was Margot and it didn't fit her and she didn't answer to it. So now she's Chaplin

I foster and it's a mixed bag. I've had some change the name once they adopt, and some keep the name 🤷

The grey one (Ollie) just had an id number at the shelter we got him from and the apricot one (Percy) was named Omelet, which I could not ever see myself yelling at the dog park.

I wouldn't let my family rename the dog we got when I was 10. I was convinced and distraught thinking it would be too traumatic for him. I thought that after the shelter and then our house where he didn't know us or where he was, we had to keep something familiar... I have no idea why my family didn't push back on that because his name from the shelter was Dude. This was pre-Big Lebowski and definitely weird.
