I was re-reading Matthew 27, and then I stumbled upon verse 52-53, “52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.” Is the Bible saying what happened here is actually after Jesus resurrects on the 3rd day? Saints as in those who died before Jesus’s death were taken to Heaven? And they appeared to many of their loved ones maybe? Thoughts?

一小時內	. arch.atj	interesting observation, I don’t think the other gospels mention about it besides Matthew’s. my understanding is, these were righteous and faithful people who walked with God, died before Jesus’s ressurrection. it doesn’t mention if they’re taken up to heaven, but we can safely assume since they’re called saints? not sure of them appearing to loved ones. i do see this event (their appearance) as - them proclaming the good news of Jesus finally conquering victory over death? (tetelestai..)

The Bible confirms that saints of the Old Testament—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Jeremiah, Daniel, and others—were taken up to be with God. What a blessed assurance! This is exactly what will happen at His second coming.

For example, it can mean to “lift out” of a pit or to “get up” from the ground. (Mt 12:11; 17:7; Lu 1:69) Matthew does not say that “the holy ones” are “raised up.” He says that their “bodies” are. Evidently, the earthquake was so powerful that the tombs were broken open and corpses were thrown out of them.
