Clarence Jordan story (told by a prof of mine back when): A very proud pastor was showing off the huge, ornate new sanctuary cross to a group that included Jordan, going on at length about the great expense they had gone to for this magnificent symbol. After he'd run out of breath, Jordan quietly said, "Time was, you could get one of those for free..."
