On this day in Southern labor history, September 9, 1739, the Stono rebellion began. On the banks of the Stono river in South Carolina, around 20 enslaved people planned what became the largest slave revolt in the British colonies. Plantation owners feared that the revolt would inspire thousands to join the movement to end slavery and new rules for controlling enslaved people were put into place immediately.
