To be fair, evolution has lead to some creatures with remarkable abilities: Mantis shrimp, Immortal jellyfish, cuttle fish, axolotl. I’m half prepared to call these evolutionary super-heroes.

The crazy thing they always miss is that evolution might actually select for religion. Hear me out. Selection pressures work by positively or negatively reinforcing reproductive success. Adaptation occurs over time because small advantages in reproductive success lead to the proliferation of the advantageous traits. Religious people typically have much larger families, sometimes very much larger. Whereas comprehensive education tends to lead to smaller or non-existent rates of reproduction.

That literally only works in a world that already has pre-existing supernatural phenomena, such as the Marvel or DC universes. They have an internally semi-consistent set of rules for how those things can play out, but it's not the actual theory of evolution.
