This is a true story. I was invited to give a reading at the inaugural Bradford Literarure Festival. No problem, I thought, happy to do it. They were a bit off with me from the start, insisting I was ‘the local poet’ despite an international reputation etc etc so bottom of the bill, there to show inclusivity. Again, whatever, I put it down to their nerves because of it being the first festival. The show was to be compared by TV & radio comedian Shazir Mirza.

This makes me sad and angry for you. How dare a stranger make you feel this way just for laughs!

This is TERRIBLE treatment. Like any scene - music, poetry, whatever - there are people who are malicious, and people who are incompetent, sometimes both. You're right to speak out. And please don't be put off. Keep working, keep showing up, build new networks if that's what it needs.

What a horrible way to treat a human being! I'm sorry this happened to you and hope it hasn't put you off all festivals.

She sounds like a completely toxic person, glad I've never heard of her.

Sounds like an abysmally thought out festival. We’re having a Literature Festival, so let’s get a poet, a standup, and a ukulele act on the same bill?!

That’s really awful. Bradford Literature Festival are also infamous for deploying, last year, an AI-generated illustration (a girl with three feet/hooves - hastily corrected, but not before capture and the ensuing shares) on their marketing last year, while also having illustrators hired to speak at the event. Chris Mould pulled out, which would have been a tough call at a time when illustrators’ work landscape is so challenged. I understand “lessons were learned”.

I’m so sorry this happened to you, appalling. Not the first story I’ve heard about SM being sneering and unpleasant.

That’s so terrible, I’m glad you shared her name. You do sound like you might have PTSD. Have you considered EMDR as a trauma treatment? It can give you your life back. Take care.
