A little bit of both. I think the specialty coffee community can be a bit pretentious at times, but that’s kinda just because coffee is becoming more of a hobby akin to wine tasting in that sense. I do like the globalization and popularization of coffee, tho, like having an abundance of coffee shops everywhere is great and having great tools to make coffee at home is awesome. Currently sipping on some iced coffee from my aeropress using beans that were locally roasted. Coolest shit ever.

The pattern seems to be: Person learns about coffee and becomes obsessed. They obtain a little pretentiousness a long the way. They alienate people in their life by being a snob. Eventually people call them out and they see the error of their ways and realize coffee can be enjoyed in a million ways and it’s not a personal attack when someone wants their coffee a different way than they’ve deemed appropriate. Some hobbyists still need to get their head out of their ass though
