I often (but not always) delete “etc.” when I see it at the end of a list. If there are important things to add to the list, let’s add them. If the list covers all the important things, let’s end it with a period and move on.

To my mind, "etc." at the end is equivalent to "e.g.," "for example," and "including" at the beginning. It means the list is incomplete. So while I suggest that authors avoid using both terms at the same time, the use of one of these seems OK if you're trying to establish that the list is not all-inclusive.
