it seems to me that there are some obvious tells of the huge strategic importance to apple of everybody wearing airpods all the time. the hearing aids thing is a clever way to socially normalize it, and "conversation awareness" makes it practical. being permanently connected to your ears and voice is a massive product foothold and moat.
