South Africa is safe for driving. There are areas, just like in any country, that you should avoid, but stick to the main routes and you’ll be fine. You’ll soon know if you’re in a place to avoid and Maps will sometimes take you into unsafe areas, so be aware of your surroundings and if you go into an obviously dodgy area, turn round.
