The #spanish word “Niño” means “boy” or “child”. It derives from the Vulgar Latin word “ninnus” which means “boy” or “child”. Linguists aren’t exactly sure where the word “ninnus” is derived from. They have some hypotheses.

Lots of words used to describe children are derived from words that children naturally speak. This is called infantile language. Think about words like “mama” or “papa” or “dada” which children say without having to learn a language. So, one hypothesis is that the word “ninnus” is derived from infantile mutterings.
