The 10k steps is more for maintaining general cardiac health and bodily movement than burning calories. But if not hitting 10k a day you will burn more by doing it.

Walking is arguably THE most underrated tool to improve health outcomes. 10k steps burns ~500 calories. A consistent 500 calorie daily deficit will result in 1lb of fat loss per week: neither too fast or too slow, ideal to sustain long term. Someone currently neither gaining nor losing fat can change nothing about their diet and start losing 1lb of fat per week simply by adding 10k steps to their current daily routine.

Don't concern yourself with burning calories. Focus on lowering glucose and insulin levels. Walking is a great way to do that.
