We’ve been living & traveling New Zealand for over 3 months. Here’s 3 things we’ve noticed about New Zealand as Americans:

3) WORK-LIFE BALANCE Ummm Americans…the kiwi have work life balance figured out. We out here working like Hebrew slaves compared to the work life in New Zealand. For example the malls here close at 6pm!! WILD! It’s not uncommon for an eatery to be closed at the beginning of the week or just close shop early. Taking 1 month vacation is normal here too. many businesses close towards end of December. In New Zealand the term work to live not live to work is practiced MUCH MORE than in the US.

Our traditional Roast Lamb , roast vegetables and mint sauce is still my favourite meal. Perhaps with pavlova, lashings of whipped cream ( real cream ) for dessert. 😊

New Zealand cuisine is meat and dairy products. In all seriousness, we’re not an old country and haven’t had a lot of time to develop our identity through food; even our indigenous population only arrived around 1250CE. The majority of our cuisine comes from our collective migrant backgrounds. We have delicious food, but “New Zealand” food isn’t really a thing. Unless you count marmite, lollycake, and seafood.

Food here is nothing to write home about. The Asian food you get here is so heavily modified to suit the kiwi tastebuds that no Asian would recognise it as their cultural cuisine. Same goes for all other ethnic foods. Don’t even get me started on what passes for sushi here. Having said that some of the foods are not objectionable. I tend to stick mostly to burgers, sandwiches and breakfast food. Most cafes have decent options for sweets and muffins and such. coffee is good almost everywhere
