Shohei is unquestionably one of the greatest talents I have ever seen. But I am wildly unimpressed with his, and everyone else’s stolen base numbers in 2024. If Rickey Henderson had a pitch clock telling him when the pitcher had to release the ball, and the larger bases that they use now, he would have stolen 200 bases in a year. The fact that no one can even get close to his record of 130 steals in a season with these rules in place tells you how great Rickey was.

9 小時內	Andrew Croiter andrewbcroiter	Yes I agree 100%. Much easier to steal bases now. Rickey Henderson’s records were unattainable with previous rules. They still might be out of reach even with the new rules. Henderson would have stolen 200 base a season.
9 小時內	Matt Collins matt_collins42	That 130 SB season is a massive outlier. The closest he got to matching that was 108 the following season. He also only had a 75.5% success rate in '82 which isn't amazing. I'm of the opinion that with today's pitchers and catchers throwing much harder than in '82 and all the analytics teams have at their disposal, Ricky wouldn't be able to match his 130 peak despite the new rules. Either teams would throw him out more or teams would prevent him from running, his team included.

14 小時內	Brian chefbfd	Rickey was great, no doubt. But if stealing bases was so easy in 2024, everyone would have swiped 50 bags. Shohei is 1 of only TWO in all of Major League baseball to do so. Saying Henderson would have stolen 200 is a little absurd, given that he never managed to even accumulate 3 consecutive 70+ SB seasons.

The point is that the fact that you even feel the need to say this and phrase it like this (wildly unimpressed) makes it seem like you’re a bit salty towards shohei. There are rule changes in all sports that make certain statistics easier to accomplish, but we still celebrate new records (I.e. look how much offensive statistics have gone up in nba and nfl ). That’s just the way it is. But I kind of agree that the celebration is a little over the top…😂😂
一天內	Eric Yabu ericyabu	The most incredible thing about Shohei’s stolen bases is that it is coming from a guy that has hit 50+ HRs. Aaron Judge has only 10 steals. That’s what made Canseco’s 40/40 so impressive. Rickey hit for power, but he was a 5’8” speed guy.

Put Ricky in with today's pitching and see how much he gets on base. Another thing to consider is this isn't a celebration of just stolen bases. It's HR + Stolen bases. HR's don't allow for Stolen base opportunities, so the more HR's you hit, the less opportunities you have for stolen bases. Ricky wouldn't break 80 in today's baseball. For his time, undisputably the 🐐. No question.
