Three and a half years ago, my husband and I adopted a rescue dog. The day that we adopted her, we learned that she had been abused for 18 months before the shelter collected her. We used to have to hold her after she woke up from nightmares. But today, she wags her tail in her sleep, and if she gets scared or lonely she comes for big hugs. Humans do not deserve the unconditional love of dogs.
