My personal experience is you’ll want to have firm plans in place by the end of a year to be in the same city or it gets much more difficult to keep things going. Daily connect is good. Regular visits to whatever extent you can afford help tremendously. Be extra forgiving as you navigate this. Try to take a trip together to see how compatible you are under the stresses of travel. Be willing to argue rather than hold things in because you don’t want to wreck the limited time you have together.

Long distance can be tough for most of people. In my case, my ex flew back to Canada due to the break out of Covid in China, he only “notified” me after he bought the flight ticket, and thought he’d come back in a few months, but things changed a bit…

I would keep it casual. And don't see it as a commitment. Keep it as pragmatic as possible.
