As the world mourns the death of Marcellus Williams by execution, as we grapple with oppression and racism in the so-called justice system, as we question if the state has the right to kill, I remember a street theater performance against the death penalty… Performed in Times Square NYC simultaneous to the too many executions in the late 90s. I joined once, urged by my theater professor. Performers met the eyes of strangers on the street, and said “I promise that I will never kill you” …/1

That particular execution was like Marcellus, a possibility of innocence, and drew thousands of us to join in handing out flyers that said person’s name, that he was now alive, and that tonight he would be dead, not in my name. We all wore black, tho on the streets of NYC that didn’t particularly set us apart. What was unusual is that we reached out to touch strangers…/2
