After 20 years in a busy city ER, I retired and began working in far north rural ERs. Pick one with low volumes. They are desparate for docs, the patients and townsfolk are very grateful, the nursing staff are great and you’re making a much needed contribution. Plus, frontier medicine is a new perspective on the logistical problems of remote areas. Give it a try before opting out. You may be pleasantly surprised.
