Hot take: I think “Omakase” おまかせ style of restaurant is the most overrated and lazy approach of a restaurant, for highly overpriced food, charging just for the “experience”.

”Omakase” simply means "chef's choice" and not necessarily high-end products. We Japanese still think that way. It is lost in transation.

It’s definitely charging for the “experience” or performance, because the food, cost of preparation really is a small portion of the price you pay. But it’s fine..? Let people have the choice!

Actually some food overpriced in that country is because of the local people value it , maybe the historical reason or May be a fantastic story behind , and it is actually no meaning to a foreigner. You don’t need to try that because you can feel what they feel. Just eat something tasty and you can find in your country is good enough

You can literally tell them how much you want to spend when you ask for omakase. For someone who lived in Japan for 10 years you sure sound stupid as fuck.

I went for a reasonably priced sushi omakase because I wasn’t that well-versed in which order I should eat the different types and which fish are best for the current season etc. It was more of a lazy solution for me. I am only allergic to yam and not picky about food so not worried about letting the chef decide the menu. If I found something I really liked in that meal, I can choose to pick that in the future.
