They are created with compartmentalized memories, so when it is activated it operates on an isolated bank of memories. Our memories are who we are. They forget the other part and become an entirely different person. This has been a known way to control somebodies mind for awhile now, and they used it to create an army of people who will do their bidding without remembering what they did.
