If Apple wanted to get back into photography, they could dust off Aperture and release it as a version that runs on the latest OS. I’d download it immediately (especially if my license still worked). That can’t be all this Pixelmator acquisition is. Unfortunately I see it as something that gets folded into Photos.

There are some features worth having but pixel editing - literally, figuratively, it doesn't matter - is not something that I can see them putting into Photos. And that certainly doesn't belong in aperture. Everything else that you'd find in a light table type piece of software has already been replicated in photos, no? Unless it's to do with layers, or masking?
