Any classical music experts on here. Where do I begin? Know the usual popular tunes. Where is good place to start this journey. Would love some advice please. Total beginner level here. Thank you. 😊

Listen to a good classical music radio station. Then follow up on the composers you hear and like. KUSC is good and streams. Otherwise it's a matter of taste but my favorite composer is Schubert. Try the sonatas if you like piano.

Try some 17th century music. It's beatiful and full of invention. I would suggest composers like Rosenmuller, Johann Biber and Arcangelo Corelli. Enjoy!

Start with Spotify. When you hear a passage that touched you, look up the info (title, composer, performer)

A few heavy hitters: Mozart - Requiem Beethoven - 5 and 9th symphonies Dvorak - New World Symphony Tchaikovsky - piano concerto no. 1 Orff - Carmina Burana Copland- Appalachian Spring First half of Handel’s Messiah Prokofiev- Romeo and Juliet Rimsky-Korsakov- Scheherazade These are all super well known and highly recognizable and (IMO) great places to start for someone new to classical music.

Listening or playing? If listening, I recommend trying different eras such as baroque, classical, romantic and Impressionism. And forms such as sonatas, concertos(concerti), symphonies, operas, find the style that fits u the most and extend it through time. For playing, I do recommend you to just find a reliable teacher, not only it can introduce to more music, also hasten your speed of learning.

There is a huge difference between, say, Baroque (Bach, Händel), Classical (Mozart, Beethoven), and (late) Romance (Brahms, Dvořak, Wagner). They may all appeal to you, or you may lean more toward one of the other. I agree with the others that finding a classical music radio station is a good place to start. Find "all-time favorites" types of samplers and play lists on Spotify etc. Check out your local music scene, perhaps there is a free concert somewhere. Catch an opera on TV or YouTube...

Listen to a new piece several times. It will begin to make sense during the second or third hearing. Even more after 5 or six. With Brahms it may take more

Start with some more modern works maybe? Kaija Saariaho, Unsuk Chin, Sofia Gubaidulina, James MacMillan, Henri Dutilleux might be a good start.
