Used to be every town had its own local time. "Noon" was when the sun was directly overhead. Then...trains. There were a bunch of crashes because trains running east and west didn't have the same time and thought the tracks would be clear. Businesses started up, marketing telegraph-syncrhonization for clocks. Which means for a while there were door to door time salesmen.
