If best means readability, then a thought-for-thought transition is best for reading whole books and personal devotions - NIV, NLT. If best means easy to understand, then a paraphrase or retelling translation is best - MSG, NIRV.

All translations are interpretations. For example, ESV has a Calvinistic and Complementarian leanings. NRSV and TNIV are more Wesleyan and Egalitarian in their rendering of specific verses. I suggest a using 3 or 4 English Bible translations.
