Always drive to the merge point and then each lane takes turns. It’s called the “zipper” and is the correct response to lanes merging

Umm… No. Both lanes should be used to the merge point and then each lane takes a turn merging. It’s called a zipper merge and is much more efficient at moving traffic than getting into one lane a mile back while the second lane remains empty!
