I love baseball but it seems like princess activity when the pitcher needs a new ball because the previous pitch got a little dirt on it.

The pitcher would rather have that same ball the whole game. Not because it's dirty, but because if it's scuffed up from contact and will move better. Curveball curve more, sliders slide more, breaking balls break more.
