Once again, I am summoning the people of Chicago: I’m a transplant, I live in an apartment, do I need to buy candy for Halloween?

Nope. Unless you’ve seen kids on your floor

We had one kid once in 3 years, but he was our next door neighbor

I’d check your neighborhood FB page. We live in a condo and have never bought candy. But, if we wanted to participate, we could either sit outside with candy or put up a note for people to buzz our unit. Our neighborhood also puts out a map for people to opt in if they are participating so kids know where to trick or treat.

Depends on your building. Are you in a two- or three-flat, then you might get trick-or-treaters. If you can turn off your front room lights, then do so to show you are not at home. If you live in a larger building, if your building allows trick-or-treating, then you might get kids who live in the building or whose grandparents live in the building. I lived in a high-rise and got about 20 knocks one Halloween.

I got a basket to hang on my door that holds candy all month for my neighbors (adults mostly, only 1 kid in our building). 🎃🍫
