I didn't know where you live, but in southern Arizona we take avocado selection both seriously and communally. Grocery stores often sort them into "ready now," "ready tomorrow," and "ready later," piles, and if they don't, it's considered good manners to state, "They're all hard today," or, "These avocados are really ripe!" to others approaching the avocado section so they can manage their expectations. If you need guac NOW you might have to go to another store, you know?
